Despite the volatile stock market, negative economic reactions and general political panic around President Trump's tariffs, public approval of how the president is handling the issue is unchanged. Currently, 43% approve of the way the President is handling the issue, and 50% disapprove. A week ago, before the tariff announcement, the numbers were 42% approve and 52% disapprove.
Still, 63% believe Congress should have the right to review any tariff imposed by a President within 90 days and determine whether it should be allowed to stand or should be overturned.
Critically, if Congress had the right to review these tariff decisions, just 36% of voters would want their representative to support the recently imposed tariffs. Forty-six percent (46%) would want their representative to vote to overturn them.
The NNS will continue to watch this issue closely in the coming weeks. Personal financial stresses, not Wall Street or politics, will be the driving forces behind a shift in public opinion.
