Politicians and legacy media outlets spread the narrative that immigration is a divisive topic. The Latest NNS poll shows that, while the issue is complicated, there is plenty of common ground to build on. In fact, the most divisive question still has a nine point majority:
Fifty-nine percent (59%) of voters favor granting citizenship to any child born to a legal resident of the United States, but not to children born to illegal immigrants. This includes 80% of Republicans, but only 38% of Democrats. Just 16% of Republicans, but 53% of Democrats, oppose this policy.
Two-thirds (67%) of voters believe that visitors or immigrants who enter the United States legally are protected by constitutional rights such as freedom of speech. Only 28% believe that illegal immigrants are protected by those rights. Among Republicans, 55% believe legal immigrants are protected, and 73% believe that illegal immigrants are not. Among Democrats, 81% believe legal immigrants are protected, but opinion is divided about illegal immigrants (40% say they are protected, 42% say they are not).
Sixty-four percent (64%) of voters say that people who stay in the United States after their visas expire should be deported like illegal immigrants. This includes a large majority (80%) of Republicans and a plurality (45%) of Democrats.
As has been the case for decades, large majorities of voters say that legal immigration is good for the United States (86%), and illegal immigration is bad for the country (82%).
