  • Eighty-one percent (81%) believe that the United States was founded on the ideals of freedom, equality, and self-governance, including large majorities of every demographic group measured.
  • When it comes to how the United States is living up to those ideals, opinion is more divided.
  • Asked what is the greatest threat to these founding ideals, 39% say the federal government. 
    • This is the top answer among both Republicans (32%) and Democrats (46%). 


The most recent data cited is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen June 25-26, 2025. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. and has a margin of error of +/- 1.6.
