When tariffs appear to be disappearing, economic confidence soars.

A Napolitan News survey was conducted in between the time that the U.S. Court of International Trade ruled President Trump could not impose most of his tariffs and the time the Federal Appeals Court overturned that ruling.

  • During that time, when it appeared much of the tariff policy would be overturned, optimism about personal finances reached the highest level in four years.
  • Thirty-three percent (33%) said their finances were getting better, and 32% said worse (net +1).

The previous four-year high was set on the day President Trump announced he was delaying tariffs on China (May 12).

  • On that day, 31% said better and 31% said worse (net even).

In political terms, perceptions of personal finances are the most important economic indicator.

The most recent data cited is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen May 29, 2025. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
