Just 39% of voters say it is appropriate to fire on drug smuggling boats, while 56% disagree and say the boats should be intercepted and the suspects arrested.
- The number saying it is appropriate to fire on the boats has gone down 5 points since early September, and the number calling for arrest has gone up 4.
- Two thirds (66%) of the GOP say it is appropriate to fire on the boats, while 81% of Democrats call for the arrest of the suspects.
In addition, just one quarter (25%) of voters are Very Confident that all boats being destroyed are smuggling drugs.
- Slightly fewer (21%) are Not At All Confident, while 26% are Somewhat Confident and 20% are Not Very Confident.
- Less than half (46%) of the GOP are Very Confident all boats are smuggling drugs, with voters who support Trump-like policies (59%) being the only group in that category to even have a plurality with that level of certainty.
- Two in five (40%) of Democrats are Not At All Confident that all the boats are smuggling drugs.
Similarly, 36% of voters prioritize destroying all drug smuggling boats, while 59% prioritize intercepting and inspecting all the boats to determine that they are carrying drugs.
- Republicans are somewhat divided, with 52% preferring to prioritize destroying all drug smuggling boats.
- However, three quarters (76%) of Democrats prioritize inspecting the boats.
