Trump V. Harvard: Postgrads Have A Lot To Learn

Publication: 04/24/2025 1:31 PM CST

While it is common to speak of an education divide between those who have degrees and those who do not, the real divide is typically between postgraduates and the rest of voters. This is true on questions surrounding the Trump Administration battle with Harvard, voters with postgraduate degrees are out of step with the rest of the nation.

Just 36% of voters think universities with billion dollar endowments-- like Harvard-- should be allowed to rely on the federal government's student loan program to help students pay for tuition. Forty-eight percent (48%) think they should fund the loans out of their own endowments.

However, among those with postgraduate degrees, 52% say the schools should be able to rely on federal student loans. Just 35% of those with bachelor's degrees and 32% of those without degrees agree.

When it comes to federal funding for research grants or things besides tuition, voters are evenly divided: 41% say yes, 39% no. Among those with postgraduate degrees, however, two thirds (67%) say think such wealthy schools should be eligible for such funding. However, those with bachelor's degrees are evenly divided (38% yes, 39% no), while only 36% of voters without degrees say the schools should no be eligible for federal funding while 42% disagree.

On the issue of taxes, voters believe that billion dollar endowment funds should be taxed by a 45% to 34% margin. This includes half (51%) of those with bachelor's degrees. Only 30% of voters with a bachelor's degree say they should not. Forty-five percent (45%) of those without degrees say they should be taxed, and 31% say they should not.

Meanwhile, a majority (52%) of those with postgraduate degrees say they should not be taxed, compared to 34% who say they should be.
