A series of primary wins by candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have the political establishment talking. Still, Scott Rasmussen, founder of the Napolitan Institute and President of RMG Research, has said for some time that every DSA candidate winning primaries should be considered a gift to the Republican party. Voters overwhelmingly reject many key DSA platforms.

Of course, one of the central issues the political bubble misses is that just 47% of voters even claim to know what a Democratic Socialist is. Of that group, about 1 in 5 simply tied the term to a "strong" or "progressive" Democrat.

In fact, 21% of voters say Democratic Socialists want less government involvement of economy and society at large, and another 22% aren't sure if they want less or more. Slightly less than 6 in 10 (57%) recognize that Democratic Socialists want more government involvement in the economy.

Still, even with the information at hand, the latest Napolitan News survey finds that a solid plurality of voters (44%) say Democratic Socialists are a threat to America's founding ideals of freedom, equality, and self-governance, while just 35% disagree. One in 5 (21%) are not sure. Seven in 10 Republicans (71%) say they are a threat to those ideals, while 6 in 10 Democrats (61%) say they are not.

Perhaps tellingly, government employees are the only measured employment group that says Democratic Socialists are not a threat to America's founding ideals. A comfortable majority (56%) hold this view, while just 26% say they are a threat to these ideals.
