55% Say Ending Shutdown Is More Important Than Ending War in Gaza

  • More than half of voters (55%) believe that ending the U.S. government shutdown is more important than ending the war between Israel and Hamas.
    • Both Democrats and Republicans are aligned with 56% (D) and 57% (R) saying we need to end the shutdown.
    • Seventy percent (70%) of voters over 65 say ending the government shutdown is more important.
  • About one third of voters (30%) say it is more important to end the war.
    • In a similar alignment, 29% of Democrats and 32% of Republicans say ending the war is more important.
    • Government employees have a mix of opinions, with 48% saying ending the war is more important, but 44% saying ending the shutdown is.
  • Fifty-one percent (51%) say it is more important to stop the war in Gaza as soon as possible than to eliminate the Hamas terrorist threat.
    • That is up 4 points from last November, when 47% said we should stop the war, and up 12 points from October 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel.
    • A majority of Democrats (65%) want to stop the war as soon as possible, compared to 41% or Republicans.
  • Overall, just one third (33%) say it is more important for Israel to eliminate the Hamas terrorist threat.
    • Almost half of Republicans (48%) say it's more important for Israel to eliminate the terrorist threat, but only 20% of Democrats agree.
    • More men (40%) than women (27%) say it's more important to eliminate the threat.


The most recent data cited is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen, October 6-7, 2025. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
