  • When first asked, 68% of voters favor suspending the federal gas tax.
    • This includes 42% who Strongly favor the idea.
    • Strong majorities of Republicans (76%) and Democrats (64%) favor the idea.
    • One in 5 voters (20%) oppose suspending the federal gas tax.
  • Voters are slightly less enthusiastic when told that the tax raises $36 billion each year.
    • Just under 6 in 10 voters (58%) favor the idea when given these details.
    • Republican support holds strong (70%), but Democratic support drops 15 points to 51%.
    • Still, a plurality (32%) Strongly favor the idea, while another 26% Somewhat favor it.
    • Overall, just 28% oppose the idea.


This data is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen, May 11-12, 2026. RMG Research, Inc., conducted the field work for the survey. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
