Currently, 65% of voters report spending more on basic household expenses like food, clothing, and utilities, than they were a year ago. Just 19% report spending less. Those totals are nearly identical to May. However, the current numbers include 30% who say they are spending Much More, up from 26% in May.

These numbers are reflecting in falling approval ratings on various issues in the month of August for President Trump. Just 38% approve of his handling of the economy. Just 34% approve of his handling of inflation.

It's Across the Board

The totals include 7 in 10 Republicans (69%) and Democrats (69%). Across income brackets about 6 in 10 voters making less than $75,000 per year report higher expenses. That number jumps to 7 in 10 for those making more than $75,000 per year.

This data is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen, August 17-18, 2026. RMG Research, Inc., conducted the field work for the survey. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
