  • Almost 9 in 10 (88%) voters say a driver's license should be an acceptable form of photo ID if photo ID is required for voting.
    • Three quarters (74%) say that a state-issued ID card is an acceptable form of ID.
    • Fewer say that a passport (62%), military ID (54%), or student ID (28%) should be an acceptable form of photo ID to vote.
    • The political parties are in close agreement with voters on most of these forms of ID.
    • An exception is student ID: 39% of Democrats say a student ID should be acceptable, but only 19% of Republicans agree.
  • If an ID (such as a driver's license or military ID) is used for voting, 81% say the ID should indicate clearly whether the person is a U.S. citizen.
    • About 1 in 10 voters (12%) do not agree, and 7% are Not Sure.
    • Ninety-five percent (95%) of Republicans say the licenses should indicate citizenship, and 68% of Democrats agree.
    • A smaller majority of postgraduates (63%) say that licenses should clearly indicate whether the person is a citizen.


This data is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen, March 25-26, 2026. RMG Research, Inc., conducted the field work for the survey. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
