If cities like New York and Chicago cannot pay their bills, 46% of registered voters think the federal government should bail them out.
- Most Democrats (61%) favor a bailout while most Republicans (52%) are opposed.
On a larger scale, 47% of registered voters think the federal government should bail out states that cannot pay their bills.
- Over one third (36%) of voters think states should be allowed to go bankrupt.

The most recent data cited is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen September 3-4, 2025. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
