In February, 46% of voters considered themselves Republicans or leaned Republican, while 42% considered themselves Democrats or leaned Democrat.
These totals, derived from interviews with 12,000 Registered Voters during the month of February, are essentially unchanged from a month ago.
However, Democrats have lost ground since October. In the last full month before the election, 46% of voters were Democrats or leaned Democrat while 44% were Republicans or leaned Republican. By November, however, the advantage shifted to the GOP.
It is normal for the victorious political party to gain ground in voter identification. However, the gains typically peak shortly after the party takes office and bears responsibility for governing.
