If a senior policy official disagrees with the president's policy directive and refuses to implement it, 54% of voters believe the president should be able to fire them. A Napolitan News survey found that 27% disagree.
However, 55% also say that there should be special protections put in place to prevent the president from firing senior policy officials who disagree with that president's policy positions. Americans believe you shouldn't be fired for your political views, but that's different from disobeying a direct order.
This Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen March 21-22, 2023. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
