  • One third (32%) of voters say the country is currently in a recession, and 42% say it is not.
    • Two weeks ago, 37% said the country was currently in a recession, and 36% said it was not.
    • Almost half (47%) of Democrats say the U.S. is in a recession, while only 31% disagree.
    • Republicans are more positive; only 19% say the country is in a recession, and 58% disagree.
  • Among the 32% who say the U.S. is in a recession, most (72%) say it will not end in the next 6 months.
    • Similarly, among the 42% of voters who say we are not in a recession, a majority (58%) say the U.S. will not enter a recession in the next 6 months.
    • As always, the party in power is more optimistic.
  • Voters have been increasingly positive about the U.S. economy and their personal finances in recent days.


This data is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen, January 5, 2026. RMG Research, Inc., conducted the field work for the survey. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
