Just 39% approve of how president Trump is handling the situation of tariffs, while 55% disapprove. Approval is up 3 points from 2 weeks ago, when 36% approved and 58% disapproved. Still, Trump's approval on tariffs has remained in the 30's since July and is down 5 points from the start of the year.

In fact, a plurality (46%) say that it would be better to cancel tariffs rather than use them to send $5,000 to every American citizen. Slightly fewer (42%) say it would be better to take the cash that the tariffs will allegedly generate.

Party splits are predictable: Republicans back the idea 63% to 26%, while Democrats oppose it 66% to 27%. In what has become a standard pattern, while Trump's base is incredibly supportive,Traditional GOP voters are divided, 48% to 43%.

Disregarding practicality, even the idea of sending a $5,000 check to voters does not have a majority in favor: 47% view the idea favorably, while 44% do not. Those numbers include 29% who Strongly Favor the idea and 33% who Strongly Oppose it. Seven-in-10 Republicans (69%) favor this idea, while 6-in-10 Democrats (60%) oppose it.

However, there is another idea to put cash into voters' hands that a majority supports: by a 19-point margin of 52% to 33%, voters favor the idea of requiring every government agency to sell 5% of its land, buildings, or other assets each year and giving the cash to voters. That idea has 20% who Strongly Favor it and 22% who Strongly Oppose it.

Republicans are slightly more in favor (71%) of this idea than the previous one, while Democrats are significantly more in favor. They are nearly evenly split: 40% favor the idea while 43% oppose it.
