The case of Abrego Garcia has gained national headlines. And, in step with longstanding trends, voters are unhappy with politicians on both sides.
Garcia admitted to entering the country illegally, but his wife is a U.S. citizen. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has admitted he was deported in error. He is accused of gang activity but has no legal record.
Voters are concerned with due process, and 56% say the U.S. government should be required to bring back "an illegal immigrant who was recently deported to El Salvador". Thirty-two percent (32%) disagree.
Republicans say the government should not be required to bring him back by a 49% to 39% margin. Democrats say they should be required to do so by a margin of 73% to 19%.
When asked, 39% of voters say it is appropriate for a U.S. Senator to treat an illegal immigrant who lived in his state as a constituent. Forty-two percent (42%) disagree. There is a predictable partisan divide, with 59% of Republicans saying it is inappropriate and 53% of Democrats saying the opposite.
It is important to remember that 80% of voters believe that legal immigration is good for the United States. This includes 76% of Republicans and 86% of Democrats. Seventy-five percent (75%) say that illegal immigration is bad for the country. This includes 92% of Republicans and 68% of Democrats.
