10% Consider Man Who Murdered United Healthcare CEO a Hero

12/13/2024

Ten percent (10%) of voters nationwide consider the man who murdered the United Healthcare CEO to be a hero. A Napolitan News survey found that 53% consider him to be a villain.  Twenty-two percent (22%) say neither label applies and 15% are not sure.

Among younger voters, those aged 18-34, 21% consider the killer to be a hero. Only 1% of senior citizens (65+) share that view.

Support for the killer is strongest among Progressive Democrats who prefer Bernie Sanders' like policies. Twenty-two percent (22%) of them consider the killer a hero and just 34% label him as a villain. Progressive leaders such as Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have made controversial statements expressing some understanding of the murderer's actions.

Among voters with a postgraduate degree, 15% consider the killer a hero. Only 8% of those with a Bachelors' degree share that view along with 9% of those without a college degree. This is one of many issue where the gap between those with a postgraduate degree and those with a bachelors degree is bigger than the gap between those with a bachelors degree and no degree.

People who talk politics every day are far more likely to consider the killer a hero (22%) than those who rarely or never talk politics (3%).

On a related question, 13% said it is sometimes justifiable to murder someone like United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson as a means to bring about important societal change. The Napolitan News survey found that 71% disagree and say such murder is never justifiable.

Similar demographic patterns were observed. Younger voters (34%), Progressive Democrats (29%), people who talk politics every day (24%), and those with a postgraduate degree (21%) were more likely than others to say that such murder is sometimes justifiable.
