  • For all the perceived divisions in our country today, Americans still agree on America's founding ideals.
    • Currently, 72% say it is fair to say America was founded on the ideals of Freedom, Equality, and Self-Governance.
    • That number has been over 80% since 2023, except for a slight blip in April 2025 when it was 72%.
    • Since 2022, the number has been 70% or above.
  • Other attitudes have also remained largely unchanged over the years.
    • Of the three ideas, 60% say that Freedom is the most important, just 1 point lower than in December and 1 point higher than in September.
    • About one quarter (27%) say Equality is most important, while just 6% say Self-Governance.
  • Almost 250 years after the founding of America, 49% of registered voters say there is a conflict between Freedom and Equality. This is down 11 points since December and down 14 points since September.
    • Thirty percent (30%) say there's no conflict, and 21% are Not Sure.
    • More Democrats (54%) than Republicans (44%) see a conflict.
    • Similarly, more younger voters ages 18 to 34 (54%) than voters over 65 years old (39%) see a conflict.
  • Sixty-two percent (62%) say Freedom is more important than equality. Just 27% of voters say Equality is more important.
    • Republicans overwhelmingly believe Freedom is the more important ideal, while Democrats side with equality by a margin of 48% to 41%.

This data is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen, March 16-17, 2026. RMG Research, Inc., conducted the field work for the survey. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
