  • The vast majority (85%) of voters say that it is better to allow free speech even though it is sometimes offensive and inaccurate, than it is to have the government determine what speech should be allowed.
    • Just ten percent (10%) take the opposite view.
  • By a 2-to-1 margin (64% to 32%), voters are more worried about the government deciding what information and news should be allowed than about disinformation and fake news itself.
  • Most (56%) say that the federal government regularly promotes disinformation and fake news to promote its own agenda.
    • Just 17% disagree.


The most recent data cited is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen July 30-31, 2025. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
