  • In an age where political affiliation is as divisive as race was in the 60's, Martin Luther King, Jr., the man and his message, is something Americans agree on. Eighty-five percent (85%) of voters have a favorable opinion of King.
    • Just 8% have an unfavorable view.
    • Those numbers include 50% who have a Very Favorable opinion of him, compared to just 3% who have a Very Unfavorable one.
  • Eighty-five percent (85%) also believe that Martin Luther King, Jr., supported America's founding ideals of freedom, equality, and self-governance.
    • A mere 6% disagree and say King did not believe in those ideals.
  • Similarly, in regards to his message, voters overwhelmingly say King's "I Have A Dream" speech was a great vision of what it would mean to truly live out America's founding ideals.
    • Eighty-six percent (86%) hold this to be true, while just 7% disagree.
  • King's Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's is said to be a good thing by 86% of Americans, with a majority (54%) calling it Very Good.
    • Just 6% of voters say it was bad for the country, with 2% calling it Very Bad.
  • Overall, 31% of voters consider MLK Day one of our nation's Most Important holidays.
    • One in 5 (19%) say it is among the Least Important, while nearly half (48%) place it Somewhere in Between.
    • About one quarter (23%) plan to do something special to celebrate the holiday this year.


This data is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen, Month dd-dd, YYYY. RMG Research, Inc., conducted the field work for the survey. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
