Democrats who don't understand how Trump got elected have their answer: love him or hate him, people trusted him on the economy more than Democratic candidates.

Most voters (57%) still name either inflation or other economic concerns as the most important voting issue. Last election cycle (and historically) voters trusted Republicans more on this topic. That is no longer true.

On inflation, 42% now trust Democrats more than Republicans, while 38% take the opposite view. On "other economic concerns", the parties are essentially tied. Forty-one percent (41%) trust Republicans more, while 40% trust Democrats. Previously, Republicans had double digit advantages on both.

The survey was conducted during a time of market turmoil and the tariff debate. Voter confidence about their personal finances fell sharply during that week. How voters feel after the dust settles will be the most important thing to watch.

In the past election, economic issues were a major problem for Democrats, as many leaders in their party decided to make their stand on social issues, (several of which are unpopular or unfamiliar to voters).

The most recent data cited is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen April 9-10, 2025. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
