Just 21% of voters say biological males who identify as women should be allowed to play women's sports. That is up 3 points from August, but the number has stayed relatively stagnant over the last several years. Meanwhile, 65% say biological males should not be allowed to play women's sports.
To give a sense of how little these numbers have changed, in February of 2022, 21% said biological males should be allowed in women's sports while 64% disagreed. The number supporting biological men in women's sports has never topped 21 percent in that time.
Just 16% of Republicans and 29% of Democrats say biological males should be allowed to compete. Eight-in-10 Republicans (78%) and 55% of Democrats say they should not.
Only 22% say biological males should be allowed to use women's locker rooms, showers, and bathrooms. Again, 64% disagree.
In a similar vein, 63% of voters say allowing biological males to play women's sports denies opportunities to women. Just 23% say it does not. The party splits are nearly identical on all of these questions.
The Divide on the Left
While the right presents a united front on transgender sports issues, the left has a deep schism. On this topic, Traditional Democrats hold views that are very similar to those of the right: by a 68% to 12% margin, Traditional Democrats say biological males should NOT be allowed in women's sports. By a 65% to 16% margin Traditional Democrats say biological males should not be allowed in women's locker rooms or bathrooms. A majority (55%) also say allowing biological males to compete denies opportunites to biological women.
Progressive voters, on the other hand, or voters who prefer policies similar to those of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) are evenly split on all these questions. On each question, 4-in-10 voters take one side, another 40% disagree and about 20% remain undecided.
The Political Bubble
The other group that is massively disconnected from the American public on this issue are those who talk about politics every day. Similar to AOC voters, they are also evenly split: 43% say biological males should be allowed in women's sports and 47% say biological males should be allowed to use women's locker rooms. Interestingly, 72% of voters who talk politics every day still say that allowing biological males to play women's sports denies biological women opportunities to compete.
