President Trump stirred up controversy as he began renaming buildings after himself in 2025.

  • While 61% of voters say it is appropriate to name public places after retired politicians, 23% disagree.
    • Equal majorities of Republicans (62%) and Democrats (62%) say this is an appropriate honor for a retired politician.
  • However, just 26% say it is appropriate to name parks, roads and bridges, schools and other public places after politicians who are still in office.
    • This number is inflated to 44% when looking at Trump-policy voters.
    • A majority of voters (56%) disapprove of naming places after politicians who are still in office, including a plurality (42%) of Republicans, and 70% of Democrats.
  • And, a mere 14% of voters think it's appropriate for politicians to be involved in naming places after themselves.
    • In contrast, 80% say the decisions should be made by others.
    • This includes large majorities of Republicans (74%) and Democrats (85%).
  • Overall, 3 quarters (75%) of voters favor a proposal that no public places can be named after a politician until they have been out of office for 10 years.
    • Just 16% oppose this proposal.
    • These numbers include 39% who Strongly Favor it, and just 4% who Strongly Oppose it.


This data is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen, February 25-26, 2026. RMG Research, Inc., conducted the field work for the survey. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
