A strong plurality (41%) mistakenly attribute the leading cause of gun deaths in the U.S. to mass shootings.
Just 16% know that suicide is, in fact, the leading cause of gun deaths.
- That places it third on the list, after mass shootings (41%) and gang violence (24%).
In addition, 23% of voters think it is at least somewhat likely that they or a family member will be killed in a random mass shooting.
- This includes 5% who say it is very likely.
Currently, half (51%) of Americans either own a gun or have an immediate family member who does.
- Forty-six percent (46%) do not.
