Just 31% of voters say that forcing pharmaceutical companies to lower prices will reduce the number of new and better drugs that those companies are able to create. A Napolitan News Survey found that 45% say it will not reduce the number of new and better drugs.
While pharmaceutical companies claim high prices go back into research and development, a majority (56%) of voters say that prescription drugs are expensive primarily because of the greed of pharmaceutical companies.
Just 20% of voters say that high costs are due to excessive government regulations, and only 17% believe high costs are a result of the high costs of research and development, with little party divide.
By a 50% to 38% margin, voters say that it would be good for Americans if the government paid for most health care and could therefore decide which drugs would or would not be available.
The most recent data cited is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen May 14-15, 2025. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
