In a country divided on policy and practice, American voters do agree on one thing: they don't trust the country's political leaders.

When it comes to important national issues, three-quarters (75%) of voters trust the American people over politicians. Just 9% trust political leaders more. Two thirds (66%) believe that the federal government has become a special interest group that looks out primarily for its own interests. Only 17% disagree with that sentiment.

Similar numbers were found when voters were asked about government and big-business collusion. Sixty-three percent (63%) think government and big-business often work together in ways that hurt consumers and investors. Only 18% take the opposite view.

The most recent data cited is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen April 14-15, 2025. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
