Plurality Rate Government Response To COVID As Poor

Publication: 05/06/2025 12:00 PM CST

Just one of three (33%) voters say federal and state governments did a good or excellent job responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. A Napolitan News survey found that 36% say the governments did a poor job. Another 26% rate the efforts as fair.

Forty-two percent (42%) say the federal government overreacted in ways that did more harm than good. Forty-seven percent (47%) disagree.

Men think the government overreacted by a 48% to 41% margin. Most women (53%) take the opposite view and say there was no overreaction.

Sixty-four percent (64%) say that, at this point, getting COVID is pretty much the same as getting the flu or a bad cold. A quarter(25%) say it is not.

Most voters (56%) now say the worst of the pandemic is behind us. Twenty-nine percent (29%) say the worst is still to come. This is the third straight survey where 56% say the worst is behind us. That's still short of the 62% who voiced that opinion in May of 2023.

Voters under 35 are evenly divided: 45% say the worst is behind us, 41% disagree.

The most recent data cited is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen April 30-May 1, 2025. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
