Just 33% of voters know that, under the Republican budget plan, federal spending will be higher in five years than it is today.

For Fiscal Year 2025, total federal spending is projected to be $7 trillion, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). Five years from now, it is projected to be 24% higher at $8.7 trillion. In ten years, spending is projected to reach $10.6 trillion.

Thirty-one percent (31%) mistakenly believe that the Republican Budget plan will reduce federal spending over the next five years. Eighteen percent (18%) expect spending to remain about the same. While technically inaccurate, this might be considered a reasonable response, since federal spending will grow about the same amount as expected under current law.

The most recent data cited is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen April 23-24, 2025. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
