Fifty-seven percent (57%) of voters say it is appropriate for the IRS to provide other government agencies with information concerning illegal immigrants. A third (33%) believe such sharing of information is not appropriate.
Republicans think it is appropriate by an overwhelming 79% to 12% margin. Democrats say it is inappropriate by a smaller, but still significant margin of 52% to 37%.
Voters are divided as to whether agreements between federal agencies to share data are (in general) violations of privacy rights that should be avoided (45%) or important tools to help the government solve problems (42%).
Republicans see them as important tools for the government by a 63% to 23% margin.
The numbers are reversed for Democrats, who believe they are violations of privacy rights by a margin of 64% to 23%.
