  • Nearly nine in ten American voters (88%) say free speech includes the right to speak out against political leaders and government agencies.
  • In a similar vein, 84% consider it Very Important to guarantee free speech to every American.
  • This is consistent with other data, showing that 85% prefer to allow free speech, even though it is sometimes offensive and inaccurate, rather than let the government determine what speech should be allowed.
    • Still, where to draw the line is an issue of debate, as another recent poll shows that 51% of voters believe it is appropriate to fire someone for celebrating an assassination online.


The most recent data cited is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen, September 23-24, 2025. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
