  • As the shutdown lengthens, favorability ratings are dropping on both sides of the aisle. The only politician in our survey whose favorability improved since we last asked was newly elected New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani.
  •  Mamdani is viewed favorably by 33%, while 37% view him unfavorably.
    • Much of his increase is simply due to increased visibility. After the mayoral elections, 21% have never heard of him or don't know enough to have an opinion, compared to 43% who said the same in August.
    • More than half (53%) of Democrats view Mamdani favorably, up 19 points from our August poll. Only 16% view him unfavorably.
    • Conversely, 59% of Republicans view Mamdani unfavorably, up 11 points from August. Just 15% view him favorably.
    • Half (52%) of those who talk politics every day view Mamdani favorably.
    • Almost two thirds (63%) of those who view socialism favorably also view Mamdani favorably.
  • Vice President J.D. Vance is viewed favorably by 44% of voters and unfavorably by 50%.
    • Vance's favorables are down 3 points from a month ago, while his unfavorables have climbed by 3.
    • Eighty-one percent (81%) of Republicans have a favorable opinion of Vance compared to just 10% of Democrats.
  • Most voters still do not have a favorable opinion of Senate Majority Leader John Thune.
    • He is viewed favorably by 20%, a 4-point drop from a month ago.
    • Thune is viewed unfavorably by 29%, a 9-point spike from last month.
    • Half (51%) have either never heard of him or don't know enough to have an opinion.
  • Senator Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has been in office since 1999 and is relatively well known.
    • He is viewed favorably by 29%, a 3-point drop from a month ago.
    • Schumer is viewed unfavorably by 51%, an 8-point spike from last month.
    • Even among Democrats, Schumer has low ratings, with 43% Favorable and 35% Unfavorable.
  • Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, is viewed favorably by 33% and unfavorably by 37%.
    • Johnson's favorables have remained steady at 33% since August.
    • His unfavorable rating of 37% is up 3 points from last month and is the highest since April when it was also 37%.
    • As expected, 57% of Republicans have a favorable opinion of Johnson, but only 14% have the same view.
  • Minority Leader of the U.S House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, has a favorable review of 29% and an unfavorable review of 35%.
    • Perhaps because Jeffries is the minority leader, his favorability numbers steadily rose from a low of 21% two years ago, but they have slowly fallen over the last few months, from 36% in July and 32% in August.
    • Many voters (36%) have never heard of Jeffries or aren't sure who he is.
