An overwhelming majority (70%) believe that requiring all employers to verify that their workers are legal residents would be more effective in causing illegal immigrants to leave the U.S. than the Trump administration's new plan ticket policy.
Voters are evenly divided between those who favor (47%) and oppose (44%) the Trump Administration's plan to pay for plane tickets for illegal immigrants to return to their home countries and give them $1,000 after they arrive.
One reason is that most (55%) are skeptical the plan will have much impact. Just 35% think it is likely that large numbers of illegal immigrants will leave the United States because of this plan.
Keeping with recent numbers, 86% believe that legal immigration is good for the United States, and 79% that illegal is bad.
Forty percent (40%) now say the Trump Administration has gone too far in deporting illegal immigrants. That's unchanged from the end of April, but up five points from 35% in early April and up 10 points from 30% in January. Still, a majority (55%) say that the administration's efforts have not gone far enough or have been about right.
