  • Two thirds of voters (66%) say the U.S. should recognize Taiwan as an independent nation.
    • This is unsurprising, given that 63% already believe Taiwan is a separate nation from China.
    • Approximately 7 in 10 voters from both parties agree the U.S. should recognize Taiwan as an independent nation, while half of independents (47%) say they are not sure.
  • Given no other information, a majority (54%) support imposing sanctions and other penalties until China respects Taiwan's independence.
    • This includes 60% of Republicans and 52% of Democrats.
    • Just 21% of voters say we should not impose sanctions until China respects Taiwan's independence.
  • At first, there is somewhat less support (47%) for the U.S. and other allies actively intervening if Taiwan were attacked.
  • However, when informed of Taiwan's role in supplying 90% of the world's most advanced superconductor chips, 65% say the U.S. and other allies should intervene if China attacks Taiwan.
    • Just 14% disagree.
    • Seven in 10 Republicans (69%) and nearly as many Democrats (65%) agree that the U.S. should intervene.
  • While nearly every measured demographic group supports protecting Taiwan if China attacks, just 30% of government employees agree.
    • Another 43% disagree and 26% are not sure.
