2025 APRIL PARTY ID: Democrats 45% Republicans 44%

Publication: 05/02/2025 7:00 AM CST

In April, 45% of Registered Voters considered themselves Democrats or leaned Democrat while 44% considered themselves Republicans or leaned Republican.

That's a big change from a month ago when 46% said they were Republicans and 41% Democrats. This is the first time since October of 2024 that Democrats have held an edge.

These totals were derived from interviews with 9,300 Registered Voters during the month of April.

While hard for political activists to accept, most Americans do not consider their political party a key part of their identity. Many people shift back and forth from leaning towards one party or being independent. It is normal for a winning presidential candidate to see alignment with his party grow as the election approaches and during the transition period. It is also normal for a president's party to begin losing voters on the margins as campaigning gives way to governing. Still, the sharp Republican decline over the past month is likely tied to growing economic pessimism and the turmoil over tariffs.

Earlier, a Napolitan News survey showed that Democrats had taken a significant lead on the Generic Congressional Ballot. That, too, was a reversal from an earlier Republican advantage.

When leaners are not included in the totals, Republicans still have a modest advantage: 37% of voters consider themselves Republicans and 35% say they are Democrats. Compared to a month ago, that's down a point for Republicans and up two for Democrats.

A description of the dynamic party weighting methodology used to obtain these results is available here.

The most recent data cited is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 9,212 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen throughout the month of April 2025.  Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. and has a margin of error of +/- 1.
